CRAFT STUFF : Toggle

A new crafting website/shop has just opened in new zealand, its called toggle and they are looking for crafters and craft enthusiasts alike to sell and buy from there site respectively!

The founders of toggle, Shelley Simpson and Esther Lamb, have put together a collection of craft and art for exhibition and sale on their website. The Internet provides two important advantages for crafters and artists; low overheads mean that sellers receive a better price for their goods, and a very wide audience can be reached.

The guiding philosophy for toggle is simple - everything is hand picked by Shelley and Esther and everything is handmade. Esther believes "there is a renaissance of affection for handmade products. We've done the legwork, found these excellent crafters and artists to exhibit on toggle. "

They currently sell work under the following categories; Accessories, Artwork, Children, Home Ware, Jewellery, Kits and Print.

Each month a range of products is featured, which this month include artist John Reynolds' badges made exclusively for toggle, glass amulets by New Zealand glass artist Ruth Allen and hand spun, dyed and knitted alpaca baby slippers made by Napier knitter Margaret Quinn.

MUSIC/COMPUTERS – WORKSHOP/GIG: Bleep 3

Hey again,

Bleep 3 is in two weeks time!

This time it's a jam workshop session at Happy on Monday the 23rd of
October (that's Labour Day), from 7pm.

We've got Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat, who has come over from Canada
via the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne to play a gig the
following night down at Indigo. He's going to give a presentation
about the kinds of things he's been involved with and then we're all
going to get to have a jam together. As always, informal and no
pressure, it's all about the music...

*INTERNATIONAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC STAR TO LEAD LOCAL MUSIC WORKSHOP*

For the first time, the Bleep workshops will be led by an
international star of the electronic music world: Montreal-based
dub/techno master Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat, touching down fresh
from the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne to present his skills at
Happy on Monday the 23rd of October.

Appearing a day ahead of his gig at the San Francisco Bath House the
following night, Monteith will give a short presentation explaining
music-making strategies he has seen work effectively in live
situations, and then workshop participants will get down to business
trying them out for themselves, using their own music gear.

Monteith's presence will lend world-class talent to local musicians.
"I've had a fair amount of experience jamming with other people,"
Monteith says, "ranging from the kind of tag team stuff I do with
Steve as Crackhaus, the online solution Robert [Henke, aka
Monolake] and I developed for Atlantic Waves, right up to the 10 to
12 person jam sessions which Mutek events here are notorious for
turning into in the wee hours of the morning."

The workshop will be held at Happy, corner Tory and Vivian St, from
7pm on Monday 23rd of October. Entry is by koha/donation. To register
or for more information, please contact Damian Stewart on 027 305
4107, email damian@frey.co.nz , or visit
the website at http://www.frey.co.nz/bleep.

*Additional information about the Bleep workshops:*

This is the third in the series of Bleep workshops for people who
make music with machines. The workshops aim to get likeminded people
together to meet and to explore music making with others in a
loosely-directed informal workshop setting.

"People shouldn't be put off by the idea of music made using

machines," says Damian Stewart, aka Frey, the organiser of the
workshops, who will be performing as support for Monteith's Deadbeat
gig the next night at the San Francisco Bath House. "If you've ever
seen inside a piano, you'll know that it's a complicated mechanical
device -- it's a machine. It's the musician that makes the music --
the musician playing the piano, or in our case, the computers and the
electronic machinery."

*Additional information about Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat:*

With music released to consistent critical acclaim on the Cynosure,
Intr_version, Revolver, and ~scape labels, and having performed at
Barcelona's Sonar festival, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's
Mutek, Monteith is well-versed in the art of electronic music-making
and live performance. "We are greatly honoured to have Scott here to
show us what's going on overseas," says Damian Stewart, organiser of
the Bleep workshops. "He brings international ideas to New Zealand,
ideas that we would have no way of getting otherwise."

FUNRAISER : Thistle Hall calling artists

Well hello there Artists!

Thistle Hall offers a win/win fundraiser - $50 for the artist and $50 towards re-installing the gallery window.

Following the successful $100 art sale format, Thistle Hall recognises that artists are often called upon to donate works of art, so in all fairness we want you to get half - you can also submit as many works as you like!

Last years fundraiser was extremely sucessful helping us raise over $4000 towards the lighting track for the Hall Gallery, which has made a huge improvement to the display of works in the gallery. The Gallery space is always in great demand from emerging and first time artists as well as more experienced and midcareer artists.

Thistle Hall is proud to be able to offer people an accessible and affordable venue for artists to show their work. This year to further improve the exposure of the gallery we would like to re-instate the side window on Arthur St, so that work in the gallery can be seen better. This is the focus of this years fundraiser and community xmas party.

We hope you will support us in this effort.

Please register as soon as possible so we can keep in contact with you.

For more info or a pdf of the registration sheet check with the fine mommas at office@thistlehall.org.nz

WE Women’s Magazine : free download

WE magazine for women is READY for the world to read.

WE magazine for women may well be the first international digital business magazine focusing on the total woman. In addition to women who want to learn more about doing business on and off the WEB, WE’s audience consists of women who want to explore great destinations, improve their outlook on life, learn quick and easy ways to get and stay healthy, find out about the latest technology gadgets and information, become inspired as they read about women making a difference in the world and discover ideas for great entertaining and socializing.

The difference between WE and other magazines for women are the stories of the women found in each issue. These women are not necessarily “household names” around the globe or even in the country in which they reside. According to Heidi Richards, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief “WE will focus on women who are making a difference in their part of the world – in many cases unsung heroines." The professions and people these women represent crosses a multitude of industries and geographic locations. The articles are written by women. With one exception. WE has a column entitled ‘In His Words' featuring contributing editors from around the globe who support and promote the work women do and in many cases work along side them.

WE magazine for women made its debut this week with the Fall Issue. To read our Inaugural Issue, visit: http://www.wecai.org/we%20magazine.pdf

Feel free to forward this message to your colleagues, family and friends.

Sounds great – just a shame about the design.

THEATRE : Here's Hilda! – short season

Here's Hilda!
Written & performed by Jan Bolwell
Directed Ralph McAllister
Designed Lisa Maule

Jan Bolwell has written a solo theatre show about her glorious, outrageous and indomitable grandmother Hilda Blair Gardiner.

Following a highly successful national tour mainly to rural centres as part of Creative NZ's Arts on Tour programme, Wellington audiences now have the chance to enjoy this unique portrayal of a twentieth century rural woman.

At age 13 Hilda was the first woman driver on the Taieri. She drove as she lived - in the fast lane! She was a member of a concert party during WW1, a driver during the 1918 flu epidemic, she raised 6 children on a farm during the Depression, became a founding member of the National Party in 1936 and an organiser par excellence in her community.

Jan portrays these aspects, and more, of Hilda's life with wit, humour and compassion.
