THEATRE : Here's Hilda! – short season

Here's Hilda!
Written & performed by Jan Bolwell
Directed Ralph McAllister
Designed Lisa Maule

Jan Bolwell has written a solo theatre show about her glorious, outrageous and indomitable grandmother Hilda Blair Gardiner.

Following a highly successful national tour mainly to rural centres as part of Creative NZ's Arts on Tour programme, Wellington audiences now have the chance to enjoy this unique portrayal of a twentieth century rural woman.

At age 13 Hilda was the first woman driver on the Taieri. She drove as she lived - in the fast lane! She was a member of a concert party during WW1, a driver during the 1918 flu epidemic, she raised 6 children on a farm during the Depression, became a founding member of the National Party in 1936 and an organiser par excellence in her community.

Jan portrays these aspects, and more, of Hilda's life with wit, humour and compassion.
