THEATRE: Radio Shade: Project ANTIGONE

Wed 26 – Sat 29 April, 8pm

WHERE: Newtown Community Centre (Cnr Rintoul & Colombo Sts)

Red Mole’s version of Sophocles’ classic drama is set in a pirate radio station in Hades, hosted by the enigmatic Firewoman. As the drama unfolds, Firewoman conducts interviews with characters both mythic and historical, including the prophetess Kassandra, the poet Sappho, the philosopher Socrates, the heroine Antigone, and there is even an appearance by the dramatist Sophocles himself. The production includes masks, puppets, and glorious live music by Jeff Henderson and Isaac Smith. The performers are Ruby Brunton, Ksenija Chobanovich and Sally Rodwell. Apart from Sophocles’ lyrical text, there are poems by Alan Brunton, Anne Carson, Sappho and the Red Mole actors. Developed in a series of workshops, the production is a feast for the senses.

SKILLS : The Successful Speaking Experience

Want to be more confident when speaking to groups?

The Successful Speaking Experience
1-day presentations skills training for women

Do you dread the thought of giving a presentation? Do you lie awake at night wondering how you are going to keep your audience interested during tomorrow’s talk? Or do you wonder how some speakers seem to impress, persuade and motivate others so easily?
For many of us, speaking to groups is one of our greatest fears, yet by learning the steps to successful speaking, we can deliver an effective presentation every time.

This popular 1-day women-only course, The ‘Successful Speaking Experience’, is held in a relaxed, fun and friendly learning environment.
It is a small supportive group, with a maximum of 8 people on the course.

Learn how to:
Look and sound more confident
Keep your audience interested at all times
Structure your presentation for maximum impact

Learn the secrets of the top speakers:
What is the one thing that separates a poor presenter from a great presenter?
What are the 4 characteristics that every audience wants from a speaker?
Do women speak differently to men? We look how we can project a more confident image

You will be able to practise in a supportive, non-threatening environment.

The ‘Experience’

Everything has been arranged for you to have a pleasant experience, so that you can start creating a mental link between ’presentation’ and ‘pleasant’!
Music and aromatherapy oils are used during the course to create a range of atmospheres.
We use the peaceful venue of Frederic Wallis House, you have an individual (clothes-on) session with a trained Reflexologist and/or Massage practitioner to bring you to a wonderful state of relaxation.
They will also explain the benefits of reflexology and massage for relaxation.
It’s a safe, intimate group, we bring some fun into the session, and you finish off by receiving a beautiful gift.

“The 'Successful Speaking Experience' was a really valuable, enjoyable day. Kim is an excellent trainer; communicating her ideas effectively and helping others do the same. Kim gave lots of great tips on how to present with impact. The relaxed, all female environment increased my confidence in public speaking. I'd definitely recommend the course to others.” E.L. PLAY : NEVER SWIM ALONE at Bats

By Daniel MacIvor
Directed by Ryan Hartigan

BATS Theatre
4-13 April (no Sun/Mon), 7pm, $16/12
book@bats.co.nz or 802 4175

A surreal comedy where the best MAN wins.

Bill and Frank were competitive childhood friends who have grown up to become competitive briefcase wielding, suit wearing men. But where is all this macho posturing leading us?

Multiple award winning Canadian writer Daniel MacIvor’s dark and hilarious social commentary on male competitiveness was a smash hit when written in 1991, and has recently gone through a spate of revivals since the start of the “war on terror”.

Directed by Chapman Tripp Award winner Ryan Hartigan, with an exciting cast including Nick Dunbar (Insiders Guide To Love; King and Country (NZ Arts Festival 2006)), and introducing the fresh talent of Aaron Cortesi (Toi Whakaari Graduate 2005) and Alicia Sutton (Dronke Prize for Drama 2002).

NEVER SWIM ALONE promises to be a powerful theatre experience, and Theatre Pataphysical are excited to produce its Australasian premiere at BATS.

“This being a work by Ryan Hartigan’s amazing Theatre Pataphysical Company, you must expect a few surreal twists. You can also rely on him to create visually compelling work that is close to choreographic”
