Election : Policies for the creative sector

An interesting point from www.thebigidea.co.nz

The Big Idea Navigator Bulletin - 12th August 2005
------------------------------------------------------

Kia ora,

We sent off a request to the 8 major political parties yesterday asking
for information on their Arts & Culture policies. Those that have
replied so far have said that they are still formulating policies on the
creative sector. That is a worrying last-minute prerogative as it
impacts quite severely on many initatives and investments currently in
play in the Creative Sector. The current government has prioritised
investment in the creative industries - the question is then would other
parties continue to perceive the creative sector as a growth economy and
sustain that level of investment. We encourage you to request policy
guidelines from all major parties to help pressure them into considering
this sector's significance to all of New Zealand. We perceive that a
healthy and innovative creative and cultural sector contributes to New
Zealand's wellbeing in a variety of ways including economic, social and
intellectual; a healthy cultural sector always adds up to more than the
sum of the parts. It helps to support diversity and tolerance within our
society, celebrates innovation and creativity and boosts our
international profile as a country and tourist destination.

We will keep you updated as the policies come our way.

Nga mihi nui,
Jacquie Clarke

• women’s language vs men’s language: is there a difference?

Kim Chamberlain, founder and principal of Successful Speaking, is a professional speaker, writer and communications trainer.

WEB LINKS We’ve got issues
A couple of issues that arose in last month’s Socket were:
• Overcoming a sense of isolation Many of us run our businesses from home, and the Internet is one way we can promote a sense of connection with the outside world. Email literally keeps you sane sometimes, and there are some great websites and forums specifically for people with home offices. As an example, try HomebizBuzz.
• Working out how much to charge If you supply services, this is always tricky. Find out what your competitors charge via your industry standard at the Statistics New Zealand website.
• Online business resources There is free remote access to thousands of full-text magazines via www.mygateway.info. All you need is a password on your library card.
• You can also check out the great online small business resource at Wellington City Libraries.

Tune In: Our Spring series of speakers is fresh as! Plug the dates into your diary now:
