LECTURE: Juan Castillo, Chilean Artist

ARTIST TALK ALL WELCOME
Juan Castillo, Chilean Artist, [10A02 - Old Museum Building]
4pm, Tuesday 15-Aug-06Jurama,
Juan Castillo is one of five members of C.A.D.A (Collective Art Action), one of the most revered artist groups that emerged in 1979 as part of what cultural critic Nelly Richard defines as the Escena de Avanzada. The movement that spawned in reaction to the military coup that saw Pinochet assume power in Chile until the early nineties. Castillo’s involvement with C.A.D.A has defined much of his practice over the last 25 years, the majority of which has been developed in exile in Sweden. Castillo’s dedication to exploring the stories and lives of his Chilean compatriots through video work and public interventions was viewed with skepticism by the dominant political regime of Chile, but now post dictatorship Castillo’s work is seen as a probing meditation on the contentious nature of the public realm, the powers that define it and the individuals who exist within its structures. Castillo’s most recent project saw him return to the streets of Santiago, Chile, where he appropriated sections of the pavement and the side of buses to explore the intricacies of the didactic messages that are inherent in political and commercial strategies. The Santiago pavements became the site for Castillo’s challenges.
