July’s speaker: Fran Wilde
Fran Wilde is the principal of Fran Wilde & Associates, Ltd and has had a fascinating career that spans a range of public sector, business and community areas.
She currently chairs Wellington Waterfront and the Food Safety Advisory Board and is on the boards of NGC and Humanware. She also provides business advisory services through her own company, Fran Wilde & Associates Ltd.
Elected four times as MP for Wellington Central, Wilde was a Parliamentary Whip, then Minister in the 1984 - 1990 Government, holding the portfolios of Minister of Tourism, Minister for Disarmament as well as Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade and of Conservation. Prior to becoming a minister she successfully sponsored through Parliament two high-profile pieces of human rights legislation; the Homosexual Law Reform Bill and the Adult Adoption Information Bill.
Wilde resigned from Parliament in 1992 after being elected Mayor of Wellington, where her new initiatives included branding, economic development programmes and vital infrastructure (wastewater treatment plant, stadium and inner city fibre optic cabling). She retired from politics in 1995.
Her business career has included roles as a company director, senior manager and consultant. In 2003 she finished six years as CEO of Trade New Zealand. Under her leadership Trade NZ topped the NZ Business Excellence Foundation awards judged under the prestigious international Malcolm Baldrige criteria.
Her present community activities include Chair of the NZ International Arts Festival and Trustee of Project K and the Life Education Foundation. She also chairs the Board of the Pacific-focussed Regional Rights Resource Team, based in Suva. In 1995 Wilde was awarded the QSO and in 2004 received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the Victoria University of Wellington.
